Information provided by Andy's wife, Doris.
"Andy is home from the hospital. We appreciate all of you holding off the e-mails. We would appreciate your holding off any jokes, pictures, etc. (anything except personal e-mails) for the next few weeks. He has undergone quite a bit of medical problems and still needs time to completely recover. Any of you who wish to get information on what he has gone through, please feel free to send us an e-mail and I will try to explain as best I can. Thanks for all your prayers. Doris"

Information provided by Doris SMITH, 23 Nov 07
"Andy is back in the hospital. Today they had a lung specialist look at him. He is having several problems. He has Congestive Heart Failure, Coronary Heart Problems, Sleep Apena; fluid buildup in the body; all that combined with his overweight, high blood pressure, and diabetes. He has a lot of things to overcome before he can come home. Wednesday when Valerie and I visited him he seemed to be doing good; the fluids had been flushed from the body; his breathing was good and he even had a sense of humor. Yesterday (Thursday) when we visited him, he was sluggish, kept falling asleep, and had lost his appetite. They are moving him to Intensive Care. He will be in the hospital for awhile. We ask that people continue to pray for his recovery." Thanks, Doris

Andy,

Glad to hear you are back home and on the road to recovery. John Moran and I spent an hour on the telephone recalling our days with you in Ansbach and catching up on old times. We need to do that again when you are part of the discussion -- we had some great times in the good old days! I will continue to pray for your total and speedy recovery Andy!

Doris called me today (late Saturday afternoon) and reported that Andy's recovery is good, but his Doctors will not release him until he gets fully off oxygen or the ventilator and breathing on his own. Hopefully will be able to go home home on Monday or Tuesday. Please send Andy a note or card to the address listed on page 137 of the current Gold Book. Carl - Moderator

Chief, get well soon, and when you are up to reading messages again, consider all the prayers we said for you and your family, and accept them as your due for a life spent serving others. When I started on the road to CID in 1971 (which, I realize, makes me a youngster around here), it was Andy Smith who took the time on a Saturday morning in Ansbach to explain the process and recommend a course of action. He was probably surprised when, 18 months later, this kid showed up back at the office, his recommendations followed, and with LTC Fontaine’s consent to be assigned to his shop as a PMI pending acceptance. Now, three careers later, I tell young folks about him to encourage others to be willing to mentor and lead others. Both he and Mrs. Smith (sorry, Ma’am, I still can’t call you by your first name) are the kind of folks you are lucky to meet in this life.

Andy is currently hospitalized at the Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville, TN. He underwent heart bypass surgery (Five arteries) on Friday and is now in recovery. I spoke with him briefly at 1:00 PM, Monday, 1 October 07. He is in good spirits and seems to be recovering on schedule. Current visitation is Familiy members only. Please, no calls right now. Doris will keep me informed about his progress and his anticipated date of going home. I will post that data as I receive it. Andy was informed that some members have posted messages to the website already. He expressed his thanks to all those who posted and your thoughts and prayers, but he has no way of viewing your messages until he returns home. Carl - Moderator

Andy's wife, Doris, advised that Andy underwent prostate surgery on 25 September and as a result of some apparent post surgery complications, has since been med-evaced to St Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN.

"Prostate surgery went fine; however, last night he started having chest pains and his stats went sky high; Valerie (our daughter) and I took him to the emergency room in Crossville,TN.
They admitted him to see if he was suffering from a heart attack. The heart doctor called this morning and said he didn't have a heart attack, however, they wanted to get him to a speciality hospital so they can run all types of tests and if necessary perform surgery. We would request all of you pray for Andy; we all know that prayers are answered."
