Walter Joseph "Joe" Stall

October 21, 1945 - January 15, 2016

Walter Joseph Stall “Joe” born in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 21, 1945, passed away on January 15, 2016 in Angeles City, Philippines where a service and cremation was held. He was the son of the late Joseph and Mamie Stall of Garden City, Georgia.

Joe grew up in Garden City, GA and graduated from Groves High School in 1963 where he was a member of the National Beta Club, played basketball, baseball and ran track. He was a member of the Garden City Methodist Church in Garden City. He attended the University of Georgia where he took ROTC and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in June 1968.

He joined the United States Army in June 1969, successfully completed and received a diploma from the U.S. Army Chemical Center and School at Ft. McClellan in Alabama and served his active duty as an officer, earning the 1st Lieutenant (0-2) ranking, until leaving active service in June 1971.

He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device. He worked as a Quality Control Chemist at a soap manufacturing company in Atlanta in 1972.

Mr. Stall began Civil Service work for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL) as a forensic chemist for 3 years at Ft. Gordon in Augusta, GA in 1973 specializing in the analysis of clandestine drugs. He then transferred to the USACIL at Camp Zama, Japan for 16 years; he returned to Ft. Gillem in Atlanta, GA in 1992 and worked for a year at the USACIL’s new location.

Then Joe worked for 6 years in Seoul, Korea as a LAN Systems Administrator for the U.S Military and returned stateside in 1999 to the USACIL, Ft. Gillem where he worked until his retirement in 2002.

He loved comedy and joke telling, was an avid photographer, a huge baseball enthusiast and beloved fan of the San Francisco Giants baseball team and Willie Mays, a renowned player.

Survivors include his sons Ichan Stall of San Francisco, CA and Bill (Nozomi) Stall of Yuma Proving Grounds, AZ; their Mom (divorced) Yoko Oyama of Okinawa, Japan; two grandchildren, Liam and Melanie Stall; one brother Bill (Sandra) Stall and nephews Daniel (Alison) Stall and Dustin Stall.

A stateside memorial service was held on February 20, 2016 at Trinity Baptist Church, in Nevils, GA.
