Joseph Michael Leta of Stone Mountain, GA and formerly of Meadville, PA died on January 31, 2021, after a brief illness.
He was born in Franklin, PA, on February 6, 1924, to Frank and Angelina Leta. A graduate of the Sacred Heart High School of Franklin, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946, seeing action in the Pacific theatre of the war, particularly in Saipan and Tinian.
Joe married Gwenyth Anne Smith on August 29, 1948, at the St Patrick's Catholic Church in Franklin. From 1955 to 1989, he was employed with the R.W. Spaulding and Son Co. of Meadville. He began his career at Spauldings in outside sales, and worked his way up to general manager, before he retired. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves with over thirty-four years of service, twenty-eight of them as a CID agent in the Criminal Investigation Command.
He retired in 1984 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. In later years, he worked part time in sales for Jim Taylor Motors of Meadville. Joe was active in many community activities in Meadville, including the Kiwanis, the Retired Officers Association and the Boy Scouts. In 2012, Joe and Gwen moved to Stone Mountain to be near other family.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Angelina Leta, his siblings, Antonina (Leta) Kemmler, Josephine (Leta) Puleo, Joseph Leta, John Leta, Antonia (Leta) Ellis, Mary (Leta) Bagnato, Paul Leta, Ann (Leta) Pangallo, and a daughter, Debra Jo (Leta) Johnson.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Gwenyth Leta of Stone Mountain, include his siblings, Frank Leta, Jr., of St Louis, MO and Angela (Leta) Moulton of Fredericksburg, VA, his children, David Leta of Stone Mountain, and Barbara (Leta) Katell of Morehead City, NC; his grandchildren, Bryan Johnson of San Diego, CA, Ramon Hess of San Francisco, CA, Samantha Hess of Elon, NC, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on February 11, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. (EST), at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, in Stone Mountain, GA. It may be live streamed at https://youtu.be/H5pwU3whkrU. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Wages and Sons of Stone Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corpus Christi conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society of Georgia, located at 600 Mountain View Drive, Stone Mountain, GA 30083.
