John James Kane, Sr.
December 9, 1932 - May 7, 2016
John James Kane, Sr, 83 of Fort Pierce, died May 7, 2016 in Miami, Florida. He was born December 9, 1932, in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Thomas and Agnes Kane. He was a graduate of Kensington High School (Buffalo,NY) and New York State University (Buffalo,NY) where he earned a Degree in Physics. He moved to Miami in 1950, and finally to Ft. Pierce in 1963.
John enlisted in the US Army in January, 1951, and served during the Korean Conflict. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, serving in the Infantry 278th Regimental Combat Team (Independent) and served with Det A-323 (Airborne) 77th Special Forces Gp, 1st Special Forces. He served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and commanded MP/CID Field Detachments. He retired from the US Army/US Army Reserve after 33 years with the rank of Colonel, Military Police/CID. His last duty assignment was Deputy Provost Marshal, US Army FORSCOM, Ft. McPherson, GA.
While in the service, he continued his schooling. US Army Airborne, Ft. Benning, GA; US Army Officers Candidate School, Infantry Center, Ft. Benning, GA; US Army Special Warfare School, Ft. Bragg, NC; US Army Command & General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS; and the US Army Military Police/Criminal Investigation (CID) School, Ft. Gordon, GA.
Following his retirement from the US Army, John was employed for 34 years as a Captain with the Florida Highway Patrol, serving in Troop K (Turnpike) and was District Supervisor in the Ft. Pierce District (Troop L). After a career with the Florida Highway Patrol, he served as a Deputy US Marshal for the Southern District of Florida and as a Detective for the Indian River County Sheriff's Office for 8 years.
While he was working in law enforcement, he attended Florida Highway Patrol Academy, Florida State University, Tallahassee; US Treasury Law Enforcement Academy BATF Washington, DC; Nova University, Ft. Lauderdale - BS in Criminal Justice. He was also A Florida State Certified Law Enforcement Instructor and on the Advisory Board for Indian River Community College. John was a member of the American Legion, Reserve Officers Assoc. of US-Life Member, Retired Military Police Officers Assoc., National Assoc. for Uniformed Services, Florida Assoc. of State Troopers - Past Director - Charter Member, Treasure Coast Chiefs of Police and Sheriff's Assoc. - Life Member, Treasure Coast Police Intelligence Unit - Past President, National Troopers Coalition and American Assoc. of State Troopers.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Kane of Ft. Pierce; four sons, Patrick Kane of Seattle, WA, St Lucie County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Kane of Ft. Pierce, Indian River County Deputy Sheriff John J. Kane Jr. of Sebastian, Florida and St. Lucie Deputy Sheriff Sean Kane of Port St. Lucie; two daughters, Karen Hurley of Sebastian and Nicole Mullican of Malabar, Florida; ten grandchildren, LaLage, Nathan and Ayla Kane; Jacob and Joshua Teller; Logan Kane; Irelynd and Andrew Kane; Casey and Riley Mullican. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas R. Kane.
Inurnment was in Riverview Cemetery, Ft. Pierce, Florida.
