James Michael Kaczmarek

January 3, 1953 - December 22, 2015

James Michael Kaczmarek passed away on Dec. 22, 2015, at Mountain View hospital, after fighting a weeklong illness.

He was born Jan. 3, 1953, in Buffalo, New York, to Michael J. and Marguerite (Gorczyca) Kaczmarek. Jim attended Turner Catholic High School, the University of Miami, the University of Buffalo and finally New Mexico State University, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

Jim came to the Southwest (the place he would come to call home) in the early '70s, when he was stationed in White Sands Missile Range as an Army criminal investigator. After serving his term in the Army, Jim moved on to work at Metro Narcotics (DEA) and also the Las Cruces Police Department as an investigator. In the '80s, Jim left LCPD to start a business of his own called High Desert Investigations and Security. In 1986, Jim became the proud and loving father to his only daughter, Amanda Marie. In 1993, he met the woman who would become his wife, Laura Stull. Jim and Laura became fast friends, began to date in 1995, and they were married in the summer of 2000. Only a few years prior, in 1998, Jim began working at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility and worked there since, most recently serving as the Physical Plant director.

Jim loved to cook and would often prepare delicious meals for his family and friends especially ribs, steak and his famous pasta salad. He seemed in his element when he was taking care of others and always enjoyed spending time with his family, which absolutely included his dogs - most recently Taffy, Scruffy, Buttercup and Buddy. Jim also enjoyed woodworking, travel, good food and good music. He had recently figured out how to use an iPad and spent much of this past summer and fall on his back patio listening to music and enjoying the beautiful yard, garden, fountain, and turtle terrarium.

Jim was strong, rugged, and durable, like a rock in the middle of a river. Life moved on and on, but he did not waver; he was an anchor for those around him. The river was not forgiving, and he wore the scars of the passing years, but he still stood. He was steadfast, stoic, quiet and deliberate. If you needed help or a person in your corner to help you fight your battle, Jim was the one to call. Most of all, there was a great depth to his love and compassion - more than he could share with words - especially for his daughter Amanda, his granddaughter Harper, and his wife, Laura.

We are proud to say that this is how we will remember him - quiet, strong and full of a fierce, bottomless love. Jim is survived by his wife, Laura (Stull) Kaczmarek, his daughter, Amanda (Bob) Gumkowski, and his granddaughter, Harper Grace Gumkowski; his stepchildren, Jasmine Martinez (Rob Kilgo) and Nick (Nessa) Martinez; and grandchildren Julian, Joshua and Jocelyn Kidd, as well as Gabe Lumayog. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon Kaczmarek (Mark Rowell) and Donna (Randy) Hosmer; his niece Rebecca Kaczmarek; his nephews Carl and Matt Hosmer; and his ex-wife Luonna Wilson. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael J. Kaczmarek and his mother Marguerite Kaczmarek.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at La Paz -Grahams Funeral Home, 555 W. Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88005

A funeral Mass will be held in Buffalo, at St. Gabriel's in Elma, New York. Services are pending.
