December 1948 August 23, 2021

John Franklin Denny of Stockbridge, GA, passed away August 23rd at the age of 72 after a long battle with dementia. Born in Atlanta in 1948, he spent his childhood in Atlanta and nearby Cartersville. John was a proud Purple Hurricane from Cartersville High School.

After graduation, he wanted to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He would be stationed in the DMZ in Korea. During this time he met his first wife, Penny, who would be the mother of two children, John, Jr. and David. John was an MP in the Army, and soon became an investigator with the Army Criminal Investigation Division. In addition to Korea, he would serve in Panama, in the Pentagon Security Office, and on other Army bases stateside. He retired from the Army at Fort Stewart, Ga. He became a Federal Firearms Instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center before joining the US Department of Defense as a contract fraud investigator, retiring as SAC of the CID Office at Fort Gillem, GA.

Shortly before Penny's death, John became a member of SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) and was one of the founding members of South River Shootists. He enjoyed Cowboy Action Shooting until his illness robbed him of his abilities.

In November 2015, he married his second wife, Kathy. They enjoyed traveling to the beach and to bases where he had served. They were also deeply involved in Outreach to the local community, working with several churches and food pantries. John passed away peacefully holding Kathy's hand, as he had for several days, surrounded by his sons and his stepson, Jason Hanes. In addition to his wife, his sons and his stepson, John is survived by a brother, Jack Denny, several nieces and nephews, and Kathy's grandchildren who he loved as his own: Megan (Brandon) Wilkinson, Christian (Madison) Teston, Jordan Teston, Andrew Teston, Aslan Teston, Victoria Danso, Robert Danso, and great-grandson Cooper Wilkinson.
