James P. Kiefer


James P. Kiefer, age 78, of Evanston, IL, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2021.

Beloved husband of Paula Kiefer (nee Behrendt). Loving son of the late Rudolph and Frances Kiefer (nee Harenchar). Fond brother of Paul (Charlotte) Kiefer. Cherished cousin of John (Kathleen) Prough and Sr. Jeanne Marie Ulica, OSF. Dear son-in-law of the late Paul and Virginia Behrendt. Proud and forever missed godfather of many. Jim was born in Farrell, PA, and grew up in Sharon, OH. In 1967, he earned a BA degree in Sociology and Psychology from Youngstown State University.

From 1967 to 1970 he served in Germany for the U.S Army, Criminal Investigation Division. As a U.S. Secret Service Special Agent from 1971 to 1977, he protected U.S Presidents Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter, among other government officials and dignitaries. He travelled around the world with Secretary of State John Connally. From 1977 to 1985, he handled national and international investigations for U.S. Customs Service. He then served as Sr. Special Agent and National Polygraph Coordinator for the IRS from 1986 until his retirement in 1995.

An entrepreneur at heart and jack-of-all trades, Jim owned his first business, a pizza restaurant, while still in college and, after retirement, worked in real estate. A true and loyal friend, Jim was always there for his fellow agents, friends, and family. Jim lit up a room with his joyful presence, quick wit, and mischievous sense of fun. A fabulous chef, Jim hosted many dinners and parties alongside his best friend and wife of 42 years, Paula. Truly a dynamic duo, Jim and Paula welcomed many into their home, making everyone feel like family.

The funeral service was on May 18, 2021at Saints Joseph & Francis Xavier Parish in Wilmette, Illinois. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, Illinois.
