John W. MacDonald
July 12, 1939 June 15, 2021

CW3 (Ret) John W. MacDonald, 81, of Newport News passed away at Riverside RMC with family by his bedside on the 15th of June 2021. John served his nation for over 26 years in the Army in Vietnam, Europe, and around the United States as a military policeman and later as a criminal investigator with the CID command. He then served his community as a Postal letter carrier for 17 years after his military retirement.

John was predeceased by his parents Archibald and Dorothy, his daughter Monique Swauger (Harry), grandson Cameron MacDonald, brother Charles (Mildred), Murdoch (Anne), Hayden (Helen), Neil, and sister Catherine Gaetz.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Suzanne C. MacDonald of Newport News, son John W. MacDonald II (Candice) of Suffolk, brother Hector (Penelope) of Massachusetts, sister Margaret MacAskill of Texas, grandsons Connor MacDonald (Miharu) in Japan, Christian, Chase, and Collin MacDonald of Suffolk, grandsons Jacob and Justin Swauger of Maryland, and numerous nieces and nephews around the country.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Disabled American Veterans or the Wounded Warrior Project. Floral arrangements are being handled through Johnsons Garden Center of Suffolk.

A visitation with the family will be held at the Baker-Foster Funeral Home at 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk, Virginia on Tuesday, June 22 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 23 at the Albert G. Horten, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. All are welcome at the cemetery, but due to their requirements, guests must meet at the Baker-Foster Funeral Home at 9 AM for the procession down.
