From multiple online sources:

Lawrence Herman Self passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at his home in Dothan, Alabama. He was 81. He was the second son of the late Herman and Winnie Self, East Brewton.

Lawrence joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 in 1947. He met his wife of 60 years, Jean, on his first tour in Hawaii. His career included 21 years Army service where he served in Okinawa, Korea, and throughout the continental United States. Following retirement, Lawrence was recruited into the U.S. Secret Service, where he served under both President Johnson in Stonewall, Texas, and at the Federal Building in Austin, Texas. He was shortly promoted to Head of Security at the Western White House in San Clemente, Calif., under President Nixon.

In 1975, Lawrence accepted a position with the Army Department of Defense in Fort McClellan, specializing with the Criminal Investigative Department Agents as a crime scene instructor. He devoted a total of 44 years serving his government.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Odell and James Self; his brother-in-law, Morris Nelson; his niece, Kathy Self; his nephews, Greg Self and Gary Moss; and his grandson, Joseph Bingham III.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Deborah (Mark) Bingham; grandchildren, Sandor Lawrence (Emily) Kelly, Samantha Bingham and Joseph Bingham IV; his brother, Earl (Sarah) Self; and sister, Louise Nelson; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was an active member of St. Columba Catholic Church, including the Knights of Columbus and Curcillo. He was also a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Republican party. He was a true "gentleman" and will be sorely missed.
