Donald B Atkins, Sr of Hephzibah, GA, died Wednesday evening, 12 January 2011. He was married to Trana Pell Atkins for almost 59 years. Born in Widen, West Virginia in 1927, he was reared in Clay County, West Virginia by Raymond and Pearl Poling. He fell in love with and married Trana in 1951. Retired from the U S Army with more than 31 years of service, D. B. was a member of the occupation forces in Germany at the end of World War II. In his early military career, he was a pilot in the Air Force and was a member of the Mach Buster's Club, having broken the speed of sound in a F-86 Sabre Jet. Also, during his tenure in the military, he served two tours in Vietnam and was Provost Marshall at a number of military bases, both in the U S and abroad. After he retired from the Army, he served as Director of Programs at Fort Gordon for Brenau University. He also served an elected position as a Hephzibah City Commissioner for 16 years until 2005. D. B. was an approachable and personable man who enjoyed conversation and carried with him an easy and congenial manner. He had the ability to diffuse a tense situation with gentle humor. He loved his family and was quick to brag about their successes. He had a heart for service and loved his tenure on the City Commission. Many Hephzibah residents will remember his efforts to establish what are now the boundaries of the Hephzibah City limits. In addition to his wife, Trana, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, D.B. Jr, and Donna Atkins; by his daughter and son-in-law Barbara (Atkins) and Paul Johann; by grandchildren Christy, D. B. III, Rachel and Rebecca; and great-grandchildren Jacob and Eva. The calling hours will be Sunday, 16 January from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Hephzibah Funeral Home, and the funeral service will be Monday, 17 January at 11:00 AM at the same location with Chaplain William E Sexton officiating. Burial will follow at Hephzibah-Vance Cemetery.
