This is an edited version of the published obituary: John A 'Sarge' Cholar, 80, loving husband to Connie S Cholar, entered into rest Tuesday, 20 October 2009 at the Uptown Division of the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta. Funeral services will be held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, 22 October 2009 at 3: PM with Father Patrick Otor, Sheriff Gary Hutchins and Chaplain Willis Everett officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Wrens Memorial Cemetery. Born in Fords, NJ, John joined the Army and retired after 27 years of service as an SFC, Supply Sergeant, in the CID Crime Lab at Ft Gordon. John served in all three Crime Labs prior to retirement. After retirement from the Army, he then worked in law enforcement in Jefferson County, GA. He was a member of the St Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Louisville, GA, as well as a member of the Wrens Optimist Club, VFW, DAV, and American Legion where he was initiated into the 40/8. Sarge was a loving husband and father, an honorable man who served his country and community proudly. He will be greatly missed. Sarge was preceded in death by his children's mother, Alberta E Cholar, his parents, two brothers and three sisters. His survivors include his five children, Julia Ann Russell, OK; Nancy Rabun, Goldsboro, NC; John A Cholar Jr, Harlem, GA; Carol McGahee, Wrens, GA; and Marie Boswell, Greensboro, GA; his three step-children, Stacy Mock, Wrens, GA; Steve Henderson, VA; and Scott Henderson, VA; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; very special "adopted" family members, Bill and Louise "Mickey" Head, Blythe, GA; Dave and Margaret McKinney, Camak, GA; and Jon and Laura Hills, Wrens, GA; and numerous other friends and loved ones. Honorary pallbearers are all law enforcement officers in Jefferson County. John was born on 18 April 1929 and passed away in the Augusta, GA, VAMC around 11: AM today, 20 October 2009 after a long and painful battle with cancer. John served as a supply sergeant in three Crime labs, Ft Gordon, Frankfurt and Japan. He retired from the Ft Gordon Lab and went to work as a Deputy in Jefferson County, GA, from where he also retired.
