MSG (Ret) Larry Mitchell Oates Sr, 73, passed away at his residence in Columbia, SC on Tuesday, 15 November 2011. MSG Oates was born in Gastonia, NC and was a son of the late Owen and Arlene Lassiter Oates, and grandson of the late Meek and Geneva Oates.
Larry was a retired U S Army Vietnam Veteran. He served in the Military Police Corps and CID. He was a member of Capital City Church and Pontiac Masonic Lodge #429. He organized a charity to contribute to the Scottish Rite Language Center and was a Special Olympics coach and Scout leader.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Joan Stillwell Oates; a
son, Larry Mitchell (Joyce) Oates Jr; a daughter, Lori Oates Scott; a stepson, James Wilson Oates; three special sons, Robert Wilson, Patrick Bundrick and Jamie Powell; grandchildren, Andrew and Elizabeth Stepp, Riley and Camden Oates and Sydney Oates; and siblings, Sue Rogers, Doug Lassiter, Judy Hoagland and Jan Scott. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and played an important part in his family's life.
A funeral service for MSG Oates was held at 1: PM on
Thursday, 17 November 2011, in the chapel of Kornegay &
Moseley Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Columbia SC. Pastor Ned Crosby officiated. Interment followed in Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors.
