Maj Gen "Betty" Clarke held a number of US Army firsts and lasts. She was the first female in the Army to attain the rank of Major General. She was the last Director of the Women's Army Corps (WAC) before women were fully assimilated into the regular Army. She was the first woman to command a Federal military installation -- Fort McClellan, Alabama - from 1978-1981. She was the first female Commandant of the US Army Military Police School and the driving force behind the first Women's Army Corps Museum at Fort McClellan, AL which was relocated to Fort Lee, VA in May 2001. Maj Gen Clarke passed away at the Army Retirement Center, San Antonio, TX on 10 June 2011. More biographical info can be viewed by going to
