Command Sergeant Major (CSM) (Ret) Peter V. Porcelli, MPC, 87 of Stockbridge, GA, passed away on 6 June 2011. He was born in Chicago, IL on 10 March 1924 to Peter and Anita Porcelli. He attended elementary and high schools in St Louis, MO. CSM Porcelli served in the United States Army for 26 years and was a veteran of two wars. He served in World War II as an infantryman in the 10th Mountain Division and later with the 15th Army Group in the mountains of Northern Italy. After the war, CSM Porcelli returned to St Louis where he was discharged. Two years later, he reenlisted and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany where he served in the Military Police Corps. He returned to the US with his new bride in 1952 where he was assigned as a military police company first sergeant, initially at Fort Custer, MI and later Camp Crowder, MO. In 1956, he was assigned to the US Army Headquarters, Far East in the Office of the Provost Marshal, Camp Zama, Japan. In 1959, CSM Porcelli was stationed at the Military Police Center and School at Fort Gordon, GA, where he served as Sergeant Major in several military police training battalions and brigades. In 1963, he returned to Germany where he served as the US Army, Europe Provost Marshal Sergeant Major. He returned to Fort Gordon in 1966 and in 1968, he served as the 95th MP Battalion Sergeant Major, 18th Military Police Brigade in Long Binh, South Viet Nam. During his tour of duty in Viet Nam, CSM Porcelli was selected in the first cohort of the newly created rank of Command Sergeant Major. He returned to Fort Gordon for his final tour in 1969 and retired in Augusta, GA in 1971. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and many other awards. CSM Porcelli served as a credit manager for a furniture company following retirement from the Army. He was a member of St Josephs Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Italian American Club. In 2002, CSM Porcelli and his wife moved to Stockbridge, GA to be closer to family. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother and is survived by his wife of 59 years Eva Maria Porcelli; children COL (Ret) Peter F Porcelli (Marcia W Porcelli) and Claudia Porcelli Lee (LTC Ret James M Lee); five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three sisters, and 15 nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered as a loving husband and father, patriot and friend to all who knew him. A viewing will be held at Cannon Cleveland Funeral Home on 8 June from 5:-7: PM and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2: PM on 9 June at St James Catholic Church in McDonough, GA.
