Lewis David Newell

May 29, 1939 July 1, 2021

Lew passed away peacefully at home, with family by his side, on July 1 at 82 years of age. He was born to Lewis M. and Rita McCabe Newell, the third of four children. He is survived by his wife Josephine "Jo" Wastaferro Newell of nearly 57 years; their son Lewis J. Newell; his brother William C. Newell; and his sister Rita "Petie" Newell Donovan. He was predeceased by his older sister Elizabeth Newell Kelly. He leaves many nieces and nephews as well.

Originally from Somerville, Lew lived for a time in Medford, in Stoneham for 25 years, in Mashpee at first seasonally, then in retirement until his death.

Lew graduated from Somerville High School in 1958, and schooling continued at both Northeastern University and Boston University.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Military Police's Criminal Investigation Department while stationed in Korea in the early/mid-sixties.

After years working in transportation management, he established his own real estate office in Stoneham, which he maintained until he and Jo moved to the Cape.

For most of his married life the Cape played a big part, with extended family in Popponesset, the beach and the boats he loved. He was an avid tennis player, and scheduled time regularly with many friends with whom he also played poker. He was a member of a Couples' Bridge group playing and socializing at Dino's Sports Bar.

A Funeral Mass was held on July 12, 2021 at Christ the King Church in Mashpee, MA. Memorial donations in Lew's memory may be sent to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod Hospice, 255 Independence Drive, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.

Cemetery and birthdate details are per the Veteran's gravesite locator here.
