Colonel (retired) Samuel A Lewis, MPC passed away on March 8, 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 83 years old. He served in Korea with V Corp in 1950-51 during the Korean War, and the 18th Military Police Brigade in Vietnam in 1967-68. He rose to the rank of full colonel, retiring from the Army in 1971. From 1973 to 1980 he was an administrator with the Phoenix Police Department where he researched, developed policies, and implemented capital improvements. In 1980, Sam began four years as Deputy Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. He became Deputy Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections in 1984. Sam was appointed Director of the Department of Corrections in 1985 by Governor Babbitt. He served as Director of DOC for ten years until his retirement from public service in 1995. Among the survivors are his wife of 61 years, Wynell; his sons, Sam and Stan; and his grandchildren Adam, Alex, and Matt. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, March 13, 2008 at The Community Church of Joy, 21000 N 75th Ave, Glendale, Arizona. Interment will follow at 1 PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mayo Clinic Arizona, cancer research, 13400 E Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, Arizona 85259 or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E Flower St, Phoenix, AZ 85014 in honor of Sam Lewis.
